NOTE: In multiplayer chat, you can bold your text by encasing it in "{" and "}" characters. You can also make it print in italics by encasing the text in "[" and "]" characters. If you want to print any of these formatting characters, you need to type the character twice (i.e. "[[" or "}}"). This will cause that character to be displayed in the chat window a single time. NOTE: AOL users will find it difficult to join multiplayer games and impossible to host games. AOL is currently working on changes to make on-line gaming easier. Contact AOL as to current status and workarounds. NOTE: The player with the fastest connection should host. Hosting on a modem can significantly increase connection time. Multiplayer JOIN Troubleshooting: * To JOIN a game via GameSpy or GameSpy Arcade, the following ports must be enabled both on your local router and by your ISP: 6667 (IRC) 3783 (Voice Chat Port) 27900 (Master Server UDP Heartbeat) 28900 (Master Server List Request) 29900 (GP Connection Manager) 29901 (GP Search Manager) 13139 (Custom UDP Pings) 6500 (Query Port) 2302 (DirectPlay) * Further GameSpy connection information can be found at "http://www.gamespyarcade.com/software/support/firewalls.shtml" * To JOIN a game using "Direct IP" or local LAN, only the DirectPlay port (2302) need be enabled. * Firewalls and Network Address Translation (NAT) present problems for multiplayer games. A new interface for both routers and operating systems called Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) greatly ameliorates these problems. If you have a UPnP operating system (Windows ME or Windows XP) and a UPnP router, you "should" be able to join any public game. If you are not UPnP compliant, you must be the first player to join the game, and no other non-UPnP players will be able to join after you. Make sure UPnP services are enabled on your router. Some current routers (Microsoft for example) always enable UPnP. Others (LinkSys for example) offer UPnP services, but disable it by default. * GameSpy prevents you from controlling the order in which players join the game since everyone is launched at the same time. If you are having firewall problems and want to control the join order, use the DirectIP connect method instead. Multiplayer HOST Troubleshooting: * Hosting a game requires that your computer act as a server on the internet and have a public IP address that others can use to join your game. Firewalls and NAT routers prevent this by isolating your local area network (LAN) from the internet. To host a game, you must configure your router to forward certain ports from the internet to your computer. You can do this with port forwarding or DMZ. Port forwarding connects individual external ports to your internal computer. DMZ forwards all (65536) ports to your computer, effectively placing your computer outside the firewall. Using DMZ is simpler, but more dangerous since your computer is now fully exposed to the internet at large. Consult your router documentation for either method. Ports that need to be forwarded are: 13139 (Custom UDP Pings) 6500 (Query Port) 2302 (DirectPlay) * Additionally, your ISP must allow you to host (act as a server) on these ports. Voice Chat Troubleshooting: DirectVoice must be enabled on your machine by running the "Voice Test Wizard" (just once). You can do this directly from the and . Select from the tab. As a convenience, the game will launch this Wizard automatically when you select from the main menu if is non-zero. For the curious, following are the compression codecs used and their bandwidths: (0) ** DIRECT VOICE DISABLED ** (1) Voxware VR12 1.4 kbit/s (2) Voxware SC03 3.2 kbit/s (3) Voxware SC06 6.4 kbit/s (4) TrueSpeech(TM) 8.6 kbit/s (5) Microsoft GSM 13.0 kbit/s (6) Microsoft ADPCM 32.8 kbit/s (7) Microsoft PCM 64.0 kbit/s Microphone Boost Many sound cards have an option called "Microphone Boost" or "Mic Boost." This feature boosts the input volume so that weak input devices can produce stronger input. If you determine that the input level from a system is too low for your voice session, you can enable microphone boost. To enable microphone boost Display the recording mixer, as described in the previous section. Enable the Advanced buttons on the mixer by choosing the Advanced command from the Options menu. Click the microphone line's Advanced button to display the microphone's Advanced Controls dialog box. Select the Microphone Boost check box. If microphone boost makes your input too loud, you can use the same procedure to disable microphone boost. If your sound card does not support microphone boost, one or more of the following will be true. The Advanced command on the recording mixer's Options menu will be unavailable. The Advanced button in the recording mixer's microphone section will be unavailable. The Microphone Boost check box on the Advanced Control dialog box will be unavailable.
